Blockade diary of Nadiya Sukhorukova is published as a book

Book #Маріуполь #Надія/#Mariupol #Nadia (Nadia is a Ukrainian name meaning ‘hope’) based on the blockade diary of Nadia Sukhorukova was published. Mariupol journalist Nadia Sukhorukova wrote it in March-April 2022, and published the texts on social networks. Now they are gathered in a book published by the publishing house Laboratory. This is a books to read and reread, and never forget what’s happened to us in 2022.

Excerpts from Nadia’s diary were in a speech of Edgars Rinkēvičs, the Latvia Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the European Parliament. British actress Greta Bellamasina performed them at a British charity evening in support of Ukraine. Lithuanian director Andryus Saulius (Vilnius Drama Theater) staged a play based on the diary.

Text from the Nadia Sukhorukova diary were published on the platform “Open Democracy” (Great Britain), in the publications “Voice of America” (USA), “New York Times” (USA), “Ukrainska Pravda” (Ukraine), “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Germany), “Bild-Zeitung” (Germany), “Freefils” (Scotland), “Vogue” (Ukraine).

The Organization of Ukrainian Producers (OUP), inspired by the Nadia Sukhorukova diary, shot a documentary film “Mariupol. Unlost hope”. The film premiered in Ukraine on Independence Day 2022, and then it was shown in 50+ cities, similar to Mariupol, around the world. OUP called it a special campaign of empathy for ordinary people who happened to get inside a war. The campaign was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Volodymyr Borodyansky, OUP co-founder, co-producer of the book: «One of the OUP’s goals is to document and show to the world the truth about the war in Ukraine. We made the film “Mariupol. Unlost hope” based on the occupation diary of Nadia Sukhorukova, and showed it in 50+ countries already. The book was an organic sequel: Nadia wrote it, the second subject of the film — Ksenia Kayan — translated it into English, another film subject — graphic designer Daniil Nemyrovsky — illustrated it. Now you can take a book written during the war and published during the war, by people who are inside the war. I think this is a unique artifact of our invincibility».

The publishing house comments that the book presents the whole story of what the Mariupol residents experienced after the Russian army invaded the city.
